GETTYSBURG STAGE opens new production with Gettysburg Festival June 24-27, 2010
"GREATER TUNA"
WHAT'S AN ARMADILLO GOT TO DO WITH IT? Ryyn Currey and Jeb Beard make use of everything, including a patriotic armadillo, in Gettysburg Stage's fast-paced comedy "Greater Tuna."

Get ready to laugh, but hold onto your hat, since a change of hats in "Greater Tuna" may mean a change in characters! GETTYSBURG STAGE, after a one-year absence, marks its return to local theatre with the fast-paced comedy "Greater Tuna" as part of the Gettysburg Festival's 2010 Fringe Festival from June 24-27.
"This production showcases two amazing actors," says the show's director, Rebecca O'Leary.
"I've worked with Ryyn Currey and Jeb Beard in earlier shows, but 'Greater Tuna' offers them both new challenges," she adds. "There are 20 wild characters in this show - and Ryyn and Jeb do them all, making the changes right in front of the audience!"
What do Arles Struvie, Thurston Wheelins, Aunt Pearl, Petey Fisk, Phineas Blye and Reverand Spikes have in common? They are among the upstanding citizens of Tuna, Texas' third-smallest town, where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. With an hilarious send-up of small-town mores, all 20 characters are played by Gettysburg Stage veteran actors Currey and Beard.
In this Off Broadway hit, they create the entire population of Tuna in a tour de farce of quick-change artistry - both of costumes and comic characterizations. The play is produced with permission of Samuel French.
In addition to acting and directing, O'Leary also serves on the Gettysburg Stage board. An accomplished actor, she earned her bachelor's degree in Theatre and Film from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) in 2003. She completed her Master of Arts degree in Humanities from Hood College. In addition to extensive work in theatre throughout the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas, she has also performed in films and at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
Show times for "Greater Tuna" are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.(doors open at 1:30 p.m.) "Greater Tuna" will be performed at the G.A.R. Building, 53 East Middle Street in Gettysburg. Please note that this fanciful adult comedy may contain suggestive themes not appropriate for children.
Tickets will be sold at the door and there are no advance reservations. Ticket prices are $12, with a discount for seniors 60 and over and students. Seating capacity at the G.A.R. building, only a block from the downtown traffic circle in Gettysburg, is limited. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for the evening shows and at 1:30 p.m. for the Sunday matinee.
The G.A.R. Building itself, since construction in 1822, has undergone a fascinating history. Theatre-goers who see the two canons astride the front walkway of the red brick structure will also be able to appreciate the murals and many historic photos inside prior to the show.
